Sheepskin at Outdoor Events: How to Style and Use It

Outdoor events have a specific problem that lighting and catering cannot solve: as soon as the temperature drops, guests start thinking about going inside. The margin between a guest who stays and one who leaves is often whether they are physically warm enough to be comfortable where they are. Sheepskin addresses this, and it does so without making the setting look as though warmth was an afterthought.

The practical and visual case

Wool fibres are hollow. They trap air and insulate without trapping moisture, which means a guest sitting on or wrapped in a sheepskin stays warm without eventually feeling clammy. A well-placed sheepskin throw over an outdoor chair looks as though it was placed there deliberately — because it was. That distinction matters at events where the setting is part of what guests are experiencing.

Natural materials also photograph well in outdoor settings. The texture of sheepskin against timber furniture, stone surfaces, or candlelight has a quality that synthetic alternatives do not. At events documented extensively on camera, that is a practical consideration as much as an aesthetic one.

Which type to specify

Natural undyed skins are the right choice for outdoor use. Dyed sheepskins fade in direct sunlight over time — not a concern for a single evening event, but a real one for venues or planners using sheepskin across a full season.

New Zealand long-wool in natural cream or off-white is the most versatile for events: consistent in appearance, substantial enough to be noticed, and available in quantities that allow a uniform look across a large seating arrangement. Icelandic long-wool adds more individual character and suits smaller, more intimate settings where natural variation between hides contributes to the aesthetic.

Tibetan and Gotland sheepskins are not suited to outdoor event use. Their pile structures do not handle repeated sitting, moving, and handling. Reserve them for indoor display or table styling.

How to place it

Over chairs. One skin per chair, draped over the back and folded over the seat. No fastening needed — the weight of the skin and the guest keeps it in place.

On benches. A double skin or two singles end to end covers a standard two-metre bench adequately. Running skins along a long table creates a consistent visual line that works well in a marquee or barn setting.

On lounge furniture. One or two pieces per seating group in a cocktail or fire pit area signals warmth before a guest has sat down. The effect does not require covering every surface.

On the floor. In a marquee or covered outdoor space, a double or quad skin under a lounge grouping grounds the arrangement and gives it the visual weight of an indoor setting.

Logistics

For larger events: count one skin per guest seat for a full chair-drape, or one per two guests for a more selective placement. Order 10–15% above what you need — this covers pieces that go missing, get marked, or are moved during the event.

At the end of the event, shake each piece out and store flat or loosely rolled in a dry, ventilated space. Do not fold tightly — the leather creases. Spot clean marks before storing; dried stains are considerably harder to lift than fresh ones.
