Practical considerations

In a school, kindergarten, or home learning space, sheepskin needs to be maintainable with realistic effort. Regular shaking is the most important step and takes seconds. Spot cleaning with a lanolin-based detergent handles most marks from art materials, food, and general use.

For New Zealand sheepskin where occasional machine washing is needed, a gentle cycle at 30 degrees is acceptable as a last resort. For Icelandic and other types, spot cleaning and airing is the complete protocol.

For a shared classroom with multiple children, a short-wool New Zealand skin in a dyed colour is usually more practical than a pale natural skin. The dyed option shows marks less readily and suits a space with heavier traffic. Natural skins are better suited to a home learning corner where use is lighter.
